Detasseling is a job where things change day to day so it is important to call if you miss a day to make sure nothing has changed. Its no fun to show up at a pick up on a day the buses arent running, so be sure to call if you miss a day. Dont listen to rumors, call me to be sure.  Cale

A MESSAGE FROM WIBBEN DETASSELING

We want to provide work conditions as pleasant as possible, while still getting the job done properly.  Sometimes "as pleasant as possible" is not very pleasant.  On some days you will be hot, on some you will be wet and cold, and on most of them you will get tired and sore.  Under these conditions, you will, undoubtedly, have periods when you are a bit irritated and may have your temper flare.  When this happens, remember the points from the list below.  These are things that we cannot and will not tolerate from anyone in our group.  I think you can see why.

  • Absolutely no alcohol or drugs will be tolerated
  • No belligerent behavior
  • Anyone fighting or attempting to start a fight will be fired immediately
  • No tampering with anyone else's possessions, especially lunches
  • Dangerous horseplay is not allowed

As you can see, the list is not long.  Beyond that we ask only that you treat others the way you would like to be treated.  Use some common sense in situations that could hurt you or someone else.  If you have a problem on the job, physical or mental, notify one of our people.  We want to know about them and get them corrected.  Please try to keep your language in the range you wouldn't mind having your mother hear.

As we start the new season, the speed at which you travel through the field should be dictated by your ability to pull tassels to our quality control standards.  The standards are very simple:  if a plant still has a tassel in it, pull it out.  The only reason any of us are getting paid is to eliminate tassels - all of them.   Poor work quality can threaten your job.  If you don't understand what to look for, ask for a refresher course.  Your crew boss is your teacher.  As the season progresses, so should your speed.

For a successful Detasseling season we require you to wear and/or bring each day:

*RAIN GEAR - Bring this every day if it looks like it’s going to rain or not!

A poncho or a large trash bag with holes cut for your head and arms will work.

*Your lunch

*Long pants

*High top shoes or boots and socks

*A hat

*A long sleeve shirt

*A large handkerchief to tie around your neck

*Sunscreen

--------------------------------------------------------------

Water, safety glasses and gloves are supplied at the field

OSHA rules require all workers to wear safety glasses and gloves at all times. Also you must wear long pants and sleeved shirts-so, no shorts or tanktops!  These are not out rules, they are government rules. We have  no control over them and are required by law to follow them.
